Allergy Testing with ALEX2

Understand Your Allergies with Clarity

Allergies can affect the skin, nose, sinuses, chest, and digestive system, and symptoms may vary from mild and intermittent to persistent and disruptive. In some patients, identifying possible triggers can help support a more informed management plan, although test results must always be interpreted together with your clinical history and symptoms.

At Alluna Medical, we provide doctor-led allergy consultation, ALEX2 blood allergy testing, and follow-up management in Hong Kong. Our approach focuses on careful assessment, appropriate test selection, and practical guidance tailored to the individual patient rather than relying on test numbers alone.

What is Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing is used to assess whether your immune system has produced sensitisation markers to specific allergens. Depending on the patient, this may help clarify possible triggers related to respiratory symptoms, eczema flares, urticaria, food-related concerns, or mixed allergy presentations, but a positive test does not always mean that a substance is the true cause of symptoms.

Because of this, allergy testing is most useful when it is part of a structured medical consultation. A doctor should review your symptom pattern, timing, environment, diet, medications, and past medical history before deciding how the results may be relevant to you.

What is the ALEX2 Blood Allergy Test?

ALEX2 is a laboratory-based blood allergy testing panel that assesses sensitisation to a broad range of allergen extracts and molecular allergen components from a single blood sample. It is designed to provide detailed information that may assist in the assessment of inhalant and selected food allergies when interpreted in the proper clinical context.

For some patients, this broader panel may be useful when symptoms are complex, triggers are unclear, or there may be cross-reactivity between allergens. Even so, ALEX2 is not a standalone diagnosis, and results should not be used in isolation to self-diagnose food allergy or to start unnecessary dietary restriction without medical review.

Who May Consider Allergy Testing?

Allergy testing may be considered in selected patients who have symptoms or histories such as:

  • Persistent or recurrent allergic rhinitis symptoms, such as sneezing, nasal blockage, itch, or runny nose.

  • Suspected environmental allergies, including dust mite, pet dander, mould, or pollen exposure.

  • Eczema or itchy skin conditions where allergy may be one contributing factor.

  • Recurrent urticaria or suspected allergic triggers, where clinically appropriate.

  • Suspected food-related reactions that need structured medical review.

  • A family or personal history suggesting an atopic tendency, including asthma, eczema, or allergic rhinitis.

Not every patient with suspected allergy needs broad-panel testing. In some cases, a targeted history, examination, empirical management, or referral may be more appropriate than extensive blood testing.

How We Approach Testing at Alluna Medical

At Alluna Medical, allergy care is provided in a doctor-led setting with consultation, test interpretation, and management planning kept within the same clinical pathway. This helps ensure that testing is requested for a clear reason and that the results are explained in a way that is relevant to the patient’s symptoms and concerns.

Our aim is not simply to generate a long list of “positives,” but to help patients understand which findings may be clinically meaningful, which may reflect sensitisation without symptoms, and what practical next steps may or may not be needed. This is especially important in Hong Kong, where common triggers such as house dust mite and indoor environmental exposure often need to be considered alongside the patient’s day-to-day setting.

Your Allergy Testing Journey

  1. Consultation – a detailed review of your symptoms, timing, suspected triggers, medical history, current medications, and relevant family history.

  2. Clinical assessment – your doctor will discuss whether allergy testing is appropriate, what its limitations are, and whether ALEX2 is the right panel for your case.

  3. Blood test – if appropriate, a blood sample is arranged for ALEX2 testing.

  4. Results review – your doctor will interpret the findings in the context of your symptoms rather than relying on the laboratory report alone.

  5. Management plan – advice may include trigger reduction, medication guidance, skin or nasal care, dietary advice where appropriate, and onward referral if needed.

What ALEX2 Results Can and Cannot Tell You

ALEX2 may help identify sensitisation patterns and possible allergen components that are relevant to your history. In some cases, this can support more precise counselling about environmental control, cross-reactivity, or the likelihood that a result is clinically meaningful.

However, allergy blood testing has limitations. A positive result does not always prove that an allergen is causing symptoms, and a negative result does not replace medical assessment if the history is strongly suggestive of allergy or another condition.

Other Types of Allergy Tests

While our service at Alluna Medical focuses on consultation, ALEX2 blood allergy testing, and management, other types of allergy tests are also used in clinical practice. These include traditional skin prick tests, selected specific IgE blood tests to individual allergens, and, in some situations, patch testing for suspected contact allergy.

Each test has its own advantages and limitations, and no single test is suitable for every patient or every type of allergy. The choice of whether to test, and which test to use, depends on your symptoms, medical history, medications, skin condition, and practical considerations such as availability and follow-up needs.

If, after consultation, another form of allergy testing (for example, skin prick testing or patch testing) appears more appropriate for your case, your doctor will discuss this with you and, where relevant, advise on referral pathways or alternative arrangements.

Management After Testing

Management depends on the patient’s history, examination, and test pattern. Depending on your case, your doctor may discuss practical allergen avoidance measures, treatment for rhinitis or skin symptoms, medication options, monitoring, or referral for further specialist input where appropriate.

For food-related concerns, management should be cautious and evidence-based. Unnecessary elimination diets can be nutritionally and socially disruptive, so changes to diet should ideally be guided by a doctor after reviewing the history and test results together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ALEX2 suitable for everyone with suspected allergy?
Not necessarily. ALEX2 may be useful in selected patients, especially when symptoms are complex or triggers are unclear, but it is not always the first or most appropriate test for every case. Suitability should be determined during consultation.

Is a blood allergy test better than skin prick testing?
They are different tools rather than direct substitutes. Which test is more appropriate depends on the clinical question, medication use, skin condition, availability, and how the results will be interpreted in context.

Can ALEX2 diagnose food allergy on its own?
No. Food allergy should not be diagnosed from a blood result alone. Clinical history remains essential, and further assessment may sometimes be needed before confirming whether a food is truly responsible for symptoms.

Should I avoid foods if my test is positive?
Not automatically. Positive sensitisation results can occur without true clinical allergy, so dietary avoidance should only be considered after medical review.

Can allergy testing help with eczema or chronic skin problems?
In some patients, allergy may be one contributing factor, but eczema and chronic itch are often multifactorial. Testing may be helpful in selected cases, though it does not explain every flare.

What happens after my results are back?
You will have a follow-up review to go through the results and discuss which findings may matter, which may not, and what treatment or lifestyle measures are reasonable next steps.

Is Allergy Testing Right for You?

Allergy testing may be worth considering if you have recurrent symptoms suggestive of allergy and would like a more structured medical assessment of potential triggers, after a discussion with a doctor. During your consultation, your doctor will discuss the possible benefits, limitations, and alternatives, and advise whether ALEX2 testing and follow-up management are appropriate for your needs.
