Suspected vascular occlusion after dermal filler in Hong Kong
If you suspect a vascular occlusion after a hyaluronic acid filler treatment, it is important to seek urgent medical attention as early as possible. At Alluna Medical, we may be able to assist selected patients who require doctor-led assessment after aesthetic filler treatment, including some patients who were treated elsewhere, depending on the circumstances and clinical urgency.

If you suspect a vascular occlusion after dermal filler treatment, it is important to seek urgent medical attention as early as possible. In most cases, your first point of contact should be the doctor or clinic that performed the injection, as they will have the most direct knowledge of the product used, the area treated, and the volume injected. 

If you have sudden visual symptoms, visual loss, severe eye pain, or any concern involving the eye area, seek immediate emergency medical care without delay; call 999 (in Hong Kong) or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. If you are unable to reach your original provider, you may contact Alluna Medical, and we will advise whether urgent review at our clinic may be appropriate or whether hospital-based emergency care is the better course.

When vascular occlusion may be suspected

A vascular occlusion is a suspected complication that may occur when blood flow to an area of skin is reduced or interrupted after filler injection. Warning signs may include:

  • severe or increasing pain, especially if disproportionate to what would usually be expected,

  • sudden blanching, whitening, dusky discoloration, or a net-like change in skin colour,

  • skin that becomes cold, mottled, or progressively darker,

  • blistering or changes suggesting threatened skin injury,

  • visual symptoms or eye pain after filler treatment, which require immediate emergency assessment.

Not every post-treatment change is a vascular occlusion, but if you are concerned, do not ignore it.

What you should do immediately

If you suspect a vascular occlusion after filler treatment:

  1. Contact the doctor or clinic that performed the treatment immediately. They will have the best knowledge of what was injected, where it was placed, and how much product was used.

  2. Seek urgent medical attention without delay. Time matters in suspected vascular compromise.

  3. If you cannot reach the original injector, contact Alluna Medical immediately. We will advise whether we may be able to assist or whether a different emergency pathway is more appropriate.

  4. Do not massage, press, or attempt to move the filler yourself.

  5. Take clear photographs of the affected area.

  6. Note the time of treatment, the product used if known, the area treated, and the total volume injected if known.

  7. If helpful, gently mark the border of visible discoloration with an eyeliner pencil so that any progression can be monitored.
